The history of Figs and the Agricultural Association Taxiarchis

The history of the Agricultural Association of Taxiarchis, begins in Northern Evia, in a village of refugees from Smyrna, and more specifically in the area of Aidinios. The village took its name from the icon of Taxiarchis that the inhabitants brought with them from the church of their old village, which was called Mursali.

When the Association was founded, its main activity was the cultivation of tobacco, which was a great success and led to the winning of the quality award at the Thessaloniki International Fair in 1932.

Listening to the trends of the time, the Agricultural Association of Taxiarchis focuses its activities on the production of dried and fresh fruits and vegetables. Allied to the favorable production conditions of the region, the new products of the association are soon recognized for their high quality in all regions of Greece.

Maintaining the high quality of its production and faithfully following the standard production and packaging procedures, the Agricultural Association of Taxiarchis again wins an award for the quality of its products from the Ministry of Agriculture in 1984.

Having now gathered the necessary knowledge and having a clear picture of the market needs, the Agricultural Association of Taxiarchis focuses on the production of figs. Since then, the Association has specialized in the cultivation of figs, which are constantly expanding, gaining the trust of the local community and the preference of the Greek and other markets.

In 2013 the dried figs of the Agricultural Association of Taxiarchis are now recognized as a product with a protected designation of origin, a very important certification that gives impetus for further development of the product.

The Agricultural Association continues its expansion and creates its first online channel that aims to further develop its activity, both in Greece and abroad.
